Top 10 Things To Do in Salzburg, Austria

If you´re on this post´s RSS feed, you must have noticed that I´ve
deliberately changed the title of this post. I figured, Salzburg is a fairly sizeble
city to do so and I felt that I know Salzburg enough to warrant a mini guide to
those whom have not set foot on Salzburg.  Nothing much changed.  It feels
as though this city has been eternally wrapped up and protected by the Alps
mountain without giving a care on whats going on around the world. My last
visit was exactly 10 years ago.  Still, like how I´ve sang praises to my friends
back then, NOT a single fast food chain around the old town was spotted!
How amazing is that?! No wonder Salzburg is listed as a World Heritage
Site.

So here goes my top 10 list to do ...

1) Take a hike up Hohensalzburg Fortress.  The view from above is
rewarding as you can see.  But what I feel sets it apart from any other hike
in other places I´ve been too is, you will be rewarded with little, little gems
along the way as well and that itself, I feel is special.  I shall not burst the
bubble on what little gems are hidden, shall I? :-P

2) Get yourself re-acquinted with Sound of Music performance in Marionette
Theater (Marionettentheater).  Since the movie was originally shot here,
where else can one experience the authenticity apart from in Salzburg? Thought
highly recommended, I had to sadly skipped it again due to time constraint.

3) Ride on a horse carriage across the Old Town or Altstadt.  It is a wonderful
way to see, hear, smell and feel this old town as how it was had always been
yesteryears.

4) Make a side trip to Dürrnberg Salt Mines in Land Salzburg. Salzburg
means after all Salt Mountain in German language and it is once a center for
salt processing.  The salt was a prize possession of the prince-archbishops of
Salzburg back but are today available in many stand alone shops in or around
Salzburg.  But still, experiencing an electrical mine train into a cave of thousands
of years old is something one should not miss if it is not available in your own
country.

5) Get Lost at the Maze of Mirabell Palace & Garden.  But if you´re
not into it, never mind.  There is plenty of benches for you to sit on, take it the
Salzburg air while marvelling at the architectural garden, statues backed by
beautiful blooms. If you have kids with you, this is the place to be because there´s
even a children playground nearby.

6) Marvel at the ceiling of Salzburg Cathedral (Dom).  It is angelically stunning!

7) Take a Stroll at St. Peters Cemetary or Petersfriedhof.  It is one of the
prettiest cemetaries I´ve ever been too and its said to be the resting place of
who´s who of the locals here.  I love the metal work installed at the VIP area
here.  Although its enclosed in, the intricacy detail from the metal work does
its magic wooing visitors to go take a peek who it belongs too.  Once you
stand infront of the gate, I was even more awed with the lovely photos or
paintings hung on the wall.  It feels like an outdoor museum with a story to tell
except that ... this is a cemetary :-P

8) Shop at Getreidegasse.  It is a beautiful old street paved in cobblestone
offering everything from fashion, souvenirs, restaurants and many more.  Its
old world charm of antique facade, old metal signages and building structure
that is so unbefitting whats inside but that´s the beauty of it.

9) Try out Salzburg or Austrian Speciality such as Mozart-Kugeln,
Sachertorte in Hotel Sacher of course, Apfelstudel, Baumküchen, Pretzel,
Wiener Schnitzel, Salzburger Nockerln, Marillenknoedel (apricot dumpling)
and lots, lots more. Also, don´t forget that mug of local beer from local
brewery!

10) Hang out at the Riverbank overlooking the Fortress.  It is one of my
favourite activity to do after being on the feet for awhile exploring this wonderful,
magnificently scenic city.  I do have a favourite spot at the riverbank.  Lets just
say, its away from the busy street, and that is one backed by I presume the most
expensive strench of gorgeously maintained villas overlooking the river towards
the Fortress.  It is here where you see locals taking a stroll after a long day at
work, or couples snuggling against each other while enjoying the wonderful view,
pets getting their daily walks or simply locals trying to get fit.  I love the feel of
this place and I have a feeling that I will return again for a third visit soon.
