I was overjoyed when I found out that Ester - one of the oysterette´s in Europe currently.
Can you imagine being here for 2 months and finally, having the chance to meet your friend from your home country? I do miss them heaps. I miss all our silly time, serious time and talking with the lahs and mahs, and switching back and forth the multiple languages we grow up with, ALL structured perfectly in a sentence.
It was a coincidence too that Juergen and I had just planned on spending the Deutschland´s National Holiday over weekend in Sauerland, a ski resort not far from Ahaus. So, there I was, upon chancing Ester´s Facebook update, anticipating and hoping that Juergen had not booked for our holiday. When he got home and told me that he had INDEED not booked Sauerland as the weather will be bad than, and he TOO had the same idea of popping over to Amsterdam instead ... that was THE SIGN. Can you imagine my RELIEVE AND JOY?
So quickly too, I got intouch with Ester whom are currently in Switzerland and went searching for our accomodation late last night. We didn´t conclude our accomodation last night and just awhile ago, Juergen came back with detail of this FABULOUS, NEW, HIP, FUNKY Hotel in Armsterdam Schiphol area (airport) called CitizenM. The best part is, it is only Euro69 per room + Euro4.00 for tax, per room per night which is damn cheap if you ask me as some hostel charges even more! And talk about the place ... the photo speaks for itself isn´t it?
For the price, we will be getting a kingsize bed, flatscreen television, rainshower, full length mirror, washing basin, toilet, laptopsafe, global plug system, lots of pillows (never forget about the pillows), Philips mood controls via Philip Moodpad, phone, seating and table area, bag storage and other neat ideas. All rooms have big windows. The Philip Moodpad is really interesting but I don´t wanna giveaway too much, so stay tune with what it can do!
Anyway, what amazed both of us during our online room booking were the personalised feature. We filled up our preference for room temperature, what is the room for (e.g romance, business, or go local ala netherlanders!) of which we choice the latter. There´s also a colour choice and we keyed in orange. Music request were urban lounge music and a few others which I can´t remember. And upon inputing these, they are suppose to set the room to our requirement as we check in.
So let´s see if they really do note our request eh.
Some of the photos showned above are of the lobby and canteen area. Canteen concept seems interesting. Here´s what mention on their website.
If your stomach is singing, head to canteenM with a 24-hour choice of signature sandwiches, salads, sushi, warm dishes and more. There are also limited-edition beverages and coffee prepared by our in-house baristas. In the evening, the bar offers fine spirits, cocktails, champagne and fresh draught beer. Enjoy a drink, dinner or chat in one of the Vitra-designed living spaces, watch TV or a movie with a friend or do some last-minute work on a presentation. If you feel like shopping, citizenM has a few essentials for a modern citizen’s needs – an assortment of magazines, city guides, design books, luxury travel accessories and other citizenM gear. When you leave citizenM, you can keep your room key card (which doubles as a luggage tag) as it will remain active for your next stay.
But of course, the most important aspect of the hotel must be the room itself. My other half was very attracted to this hotel as some of the rooms overlook the runway of Schiphol airport and he being in vehicle production industry, his words to me just now was .. `Hey, we can spent the whole day in the hotel if we don´t feel like going downtown`. Hahaha. Funny.
The room looks kinda narrow, but the bed size covers the whole width of the room. I was so WOWED by the toilet and shower cubicle and had forgotten about, errr .. how am I going to do my business there???!!!
I mean, showering is fine (ahem, no need shy shy lah) but you know, THAT business in the toilet cubicle which is at the front left, HOW??? It came with frosted glass BUT ... you can still see what´s happening inside.
Soooo ... this is THE HOTEL we are looking forward too. Hopefully, it is as impressive as what is shown. BTW, this place opened only in June 2008 and its the first CitizenM in the world. They have hugeee plans and looks like they will be conquering European budget concious but not quality concious travellers SOON. We hope, this leaves a good impression for us to stay with them again whenever we travel in the future.
WEEEEEEE!!!

Hi Lianne,
I have been following your blog quite frequently. I'm a M'sian married to a dutch guy, residing in NL. How's life in DL?
Lannie Loke
great looking hotel. love the bed n the 'two-each' pillows. can never sleep with one pillow only
Hi Lannie! Great to know another malaysian in a foreign land. Which part of Netherland you living in? I live near the border, close to Enschede. Deutschland has been good, clean and efficent though a bit too cold at times brrrr. As a blogger, I love the traveling part but not the food part. The people here are friendly but language is a prob definately. All said, I miss Malaysia heaps. Family is there, and the buzz is there. Over here, everything is going at snail pace lol
A feast everyday ... hehehe, yup especially if the pillow is long and called bolster, which i miss dearly. Over in deutschland, they use a super huggeee pillow aka cushions we use to place on the floor! hehehe really.
Hi Lianne,
I'm staying Friesland province, north of NL. I have been once in Enschede, long time ago, when my SIL was staying there.
Do you go to school to learn Duits? Over here is compulsory to attend school for foreigners.
Well, beginning life in foreign land is always not easy. Be patient. I have been in NL for more than 7 years. Once you settle down, meet some friends, or even have your own family, then you will be glad to be here than in M'sia.
Northern part of NL, means colder? Brrrrr ... :-) Ah, you´ve been to Enschede. I kinda like the city, everything´s there and not too big like Amsterdam. Manageable.
My classes will be starting coming Tuesday. Monday´s my orientation and yes, its compulsory to pass deutsch exam before I come in actually but he sponsored me, and there´s a good excuse to do the class from here instead. But what I will be learning next week is more than just the language. It is an integration course, so to speak and we figured this might be better than the basic language course, which they needed.
Yeah .. its not easy in foreign land. Wow, 7 years! Hehehe, yeah .. actually, I love how this county works. The country´s system and how life here are in general. In time I hope, with my language skill up, the rest should be in place.
Do drop me a mail if you wish. My address is at lianne_kang@yahoo.com
